The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of Camelot – Small Cast Version at The Loft Theatre brings Lerner and Loewe’s classic to life in a captivating production, featuring a talented ensemble of eight performers. It’s a perfect blend of compelling storytelling and musicality, seamlessly combining powerful voices with dynamic performances.
What’s Camelot All About?
Since its Broadway debut in 1960, Camelot has seen numerous professional, amateur, and school performances, including a Broadway revival in 1980 and several national tours. This particular version, adapted by David Lee, takes a fresh approach by removing many subplots and characters, introducing a framing device in which a group of ‘revelers’ recount the love triangle between King Arthur, Queen Guenevere, and Sir Lancelot as they navigate love, honor, and betrayal in the kingdom, alongside the legendary Knights of the Round Table. As the story unfolds, tensions rise, sowing discord among the discontented knights and threatening the very ideals upon which Arthur’s kingdom was founded.

Top-notch Cast and Skilled Behind-the-Scenes Team
Directed by Emily N. Wells, the production brings Camelot to life with both intimacy and energy. Wells expertly guides a talented ensemble, capturing the essence of the beloved characters and iconic songs like “The Lusty Month of May”, “I Loved You Once in Silence”, and “The Seven Deadly Virtues”, all while preserving the larger-than-life scope of the legendary tale.
The show’s visual impact is amplified by striking medieval-style costumes and stunning lighting design, which complement the staging seamlessly. The turntables are cleverly utilized, keeping both the action and the narrative moving fluidly.
The cast is exceptional, led by Adam Thatcher’s charming portrayal of the idealistic yet self-doubting Arthur. He captivates the audience with his acting, effortlessly drawing them in. Aleah Vassell shines as Guenevere, with a commanding stage presence and a glorious voice that brings vitality to “The Lusty Month of May” and beyond. Trevor Bunce is a highlight as Lancelot, earning the most laughs with his impeccable comedic timing. Other standout performances include Justin King as the deliciously malevolent Mordred, whose stage presence is magnetic from his first moment, perfectly embodying the mustache-twirling villain. The trio of knights—Christian Hall as Sir Lionel, Tai Rosenblatt as Sir Sagramore, and Jason Slattery as Sir Dinadan—each bring memorable touches to the stage, rounding out a stellar cast.

Final Royal Verdict
This Camelot is a definite crowd-pleaser. I found myself smiling throughout, completely caught up in the magic unfolding on stage. The production is excellently paced, well-cast, and features strong vocal performances, along with a dazzling set and top-notch production values.
