A Distinct Society at The Human Race Theatre Company is a timely and poignant exploration of human connection in the face of political division. Kareem Fahmy’s play, based on true events, unfolds in a library straddling the U.S.-Canada border, where five individuals from diverse backgrounds converge amidst the chaos of the “Muslim ban.” This new play explores into the ways in which family, food, art, love, and politics can be sources of both conflict and connection.

Fahmy’s script deftly weaves together personal stories with larger political themes, creating a microcosm of our current societal divisions within the library’s walls. The play challenges audiences to consider the human cost of border policies and the power of empathy to bridge divides.

Impressive Cast and Skilled Production Team

The ensemble cast breathes life into this intricate narrative with nuanced performances. Kyle Flick shines as Shirin Galani, a young Iranian woman separated from her father. Jame Rana brings depth to Peyman Gilani, Shirin’s father trapped on the other side of the border. Kelly Mengelkoch’s portrayal of Manon Desiardins, the determined librarian, anchors the story with quiet strength. Rico Romulas Parker, the conflicted boarder patrol officer Bruce Laird, and Cooper Schairbaum as Declan Sheehan, a young teenager obsessed with DC’s Green Lantern comic books, round out the cast. Each performer adds layers to the complex web of relationships that form within the library’s walls.

Director Brant Russell orchestrates this delicate balance of tension and tenderness with a deft hand, allowing the characters’ stories to unfold. Mark Halpin’s scenic design sets an appropriate space.. Cat Schmeal-Swope’s costumes subtly underscore each character’s background, while Darin Keesing’s lighting creates and atmosphere that shifts from cozy to claustrophobic as the stakes rise. The production benefits greatly from the insights of Cultural Advisor Samaneh Faramarzi, ensuring authenticity in its portrayal of Iranian culture.

Their innovative “Parents Night Out” program offers free theater workshops for children while parents enjoy the show.

A Distinct Society further shows HRTC’s dedication to producing thought-provoking, socially relevant work. It highlights theater’s unique ability to foster understanding and connect us with other members–of the human race–even in the most unlikely of places. These five strangers navigate their unexpected circumstances, and we’re invited to reflect on our own preconceptions and the artificial boundaries that separate us.

Overall: A Distinct Society is a Poignant and Personal Show

A Distinct Society offers a refreshing and necessary perspective. It’s a quiet yet powerful call for compassion. It is a reminder that behind every policy debate are real people with hopes, fears, and dreams not so different from our own. This production is a must-see.
