If your Holidays need a laugh and a beer, “Who’s Holiday” in Dayton will bring you good cheer.
Our favorite Who is grown up and much wiser, since years…oh no spoilers, they want to surprise yer.
Okay, I’ll leave the rhyme up to playwright Matthew Lombardo, inspiration Dr. Seuss, and actress Alex Sunderhaus, who carries this charming one-person show, filling the Loft Theatre with laughter and song–even an impressive rap.
“Who’s Holiday” bills itself as a “who-larious” evening of entertainment, but it is more than that. There is quite a story arc for our girl, Cindy Lou,from Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Your heart will ride up and down, like on a huge sled in the Seussian mountains. Sunderhaus’s joy is contagious as she relates her story, marriage, child, substance abuse, and more which land her in the trailer park where she entertains the audience as she prepares for a party with Yertle the Turtle, the Lorax, and so many more big names in Whoville.
Directed by Joe Deer, the pace is quick and the repartee with the audience even quicker. The set has so many great details, but is a spacious trailer lit for the season by Scott J. Kimmins (scenery) and John Rensel (lights).
The Zoe Still’s costumes are appropriately bright and brash, and the sound by Alexander Koker is crisp and clear.
With so many seasonal things to do with the kids, it’s nice to have something just for the adults. And it IS for adults, due to language and themes. Treat yourself to a 65-minute show, no intermission. The bar will be open before hand — and you just may be lucky enough to get a treat from our hostess with the mostest.
