REVIEW: “Higher” is Much More Than Entertainment

Higher delivers on the promise of the modern rock musical; It touches the soul through harmony and beauty while bringing you face to face with uncomfortable slices of reality.

Review by Lara Gonzalez

American Legacy Theater presents an original Rock musical HIGHER. The show is full of driving beats and hummable melodies, but it is much more than a night of entertainment. HIGHER has a mission to reduce stigma surrounding those impacted by the opioid crisis. HIGHER been newly rewritten, and returning to production for the first time since its world premiere in 2021.

The Plot of HIGHER

HIGHER is a rock musical with music, lyrics, and book by Mark Levine. During the performance, we experience Benjamin’s All-American beginnings and see how life’s harsh realities align to derail his dreams. As he searches for meaning and belonging, his newfound love, Mara, offers a tempting and dangerous “solution.”

Something Different

From the first moment, you know that this will be a non-traditional evening. The performance is on the 4th floor of a downtown art gallery. The “stage” is a section of open floor space and extends into contemporary staircases behind it. The band is stationed on a level above and behind the audience- at several points they are joined by singers and soloists as well. The need to look up and back is another tool which puts the audience in the middle of the action. As early as the opening speech, we are encouraged to keep our phones out–to bring these thoughts together with the outside world and reality beyond a single night of entertainment.

The  Production Team

Matthew Gellin takes the helm as Producer, Director, and Designer for this thought-provoking show. His passion for the production is evident from his opening speech and excellent facilitation of the talk-back following the show.

Musical Director Stacey Sands and Arranger Eric Knechtges go above and beyond making the harmonies in this work soar. There are great solo moments for sure. This show is also packed with beautiful harmony which is brilliantly executed and adds a level of goosebumps in several songs.

Leads in HIGHER

The standout of this show is Dylan Van Camp, who plays the lead role of Benjamin. Dylan has an expressive voice and engaging demeanor. As the show progresses, his character becomes increasingly desperate and passionate. The vocal lines mirror this progression with growing range and skill. By the final numbers Dylan is repeatedly delivering notes and intensity which would make legends like Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler think twice!

Bethany Xan Kerr plays the romantic lead of the work–Mara. She has a magnetic personality that makes you want to watch her wherever she appears. Her performance in Act 1 is engaging, but the first half of Act 2 is where Bethany really shines. Here solo “Survive” is a show-stopper!

But wait, there’s more! There is a 7-person ensemble which play multiple roles throughout the performance. Constance Kavensky has a beautiful voice, and electric personality which shines through each characterization she portrays. Jovanni Candia delivers an edgy sarcasm which provides a welcome relief valve of humor during many otherwise heavy moments. R DeAndre Smith and Anita Anderson play Benjamin’s parents (among other roles) and have voices smooth as butter.

Bottom Line

HIGHER delivers on the promise of the modern rock musical; It touches the soul through harmony and beauty while bringing you face to face with uncomfortable slices of reality.
