REVIEW: “Escape to Margaritaville” at Incline

Whether you’re a Jimmy Buffett fan or just searching for an entertaining night out, this musical will surely leave you smiling.

By Molly Alderson

Cincinnati Landmark Theatre presents Jimmy Buffett’s Escape to Margaritaville, a feel-good musical that celebrates the “parrothead” culture with iconic tunes and laid-back lifestyle. This production whisks audiences to a tropical paradise with a lighthearted and breezy storyline. Music and Lyrics are by Jimmy Buffet and Book by Greg Garcia and Mike O’Malley.

The Plot of Escape to Margaritaville

The plot, much like Buffett’s music, is simple and predictable. It follows the story of island bum Tully (Zachary Petrie) and his romance with career-driven visitor Rachel (Jordan Darnell). While the narrative may lack depth, it beautifully captures the carefree essence of Buffett’s songs, with the lead duo shining in numbers like “Come Monday,” “Margaritaville,” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”

The Production

The cast delivers endearing performances, particularly the chemistry between the main couples—Tully and Rachel, and Brick (Christopher Wells) and Tammy (Rebecca Wall). However, the show could benefit from a more contemporary approach, especially in dialogue, comedic timing, and physical comedy. The humor occasionally leans into outdated territory, reminiscent of an awkward uncle at a family gathering. The choreography is also surprisingly somewhat out of place for the show’s style and vibe; however, the talented ensemble executes it flawlessly, especially the surprising and challenging tap number.

Standouts

Standout performances from Jordan Ward, Grant Zentmeyer, Zach Treinen, Caroline Rakestraw, Anthony Nocero, Gabriel Kanai Nakata, Yolee Louis, Mollie Tagher, and Evan Rogers add vibrancy to the production. Additionally, JD (Jamie Steele) delivers a heartfelt and sweet performance, making him a beloved show highlight. The show features Music Director Greg Dastillung who conducts the live band.

Charming Design

The set, designed by Brett Bowling and constructed by Jeff Centrello, Jeremiah Plessinger, Jenny Harndon, and John Herndon, is a delightful and fitting backdrop for the show, offering a few unexpected moments that add to the charm. Costumes by June Hill and Jesselee Whitson fit the island vibe.
